Of West African origin, Nigerian Dwarf goats are described as "miniature dairy goats".
Even though their tiny size, colorful coats and pleasing personalities make the
Nigerians sought-after pets, many people are discovering there is a lot more to
appreciate about them!
The Nigerian Dwarf is also a wonderful choice for those caprine enthusiasts who
are elderly, very young or even disabled, as the Nigerians' small size makes them
very easy to handle. These little goats have proven themselves to be quite hardy,
acclimating easily anywhere from the frigid North to the sweltering deserts. They also blend in with any goat herd easily.
Kids are born around 2 lbs. and can be fertile as early as 7 weeks so bucks and does should be separated at an early age.
Bucks can be used as stud at around 3 months of age and can easily complete the task by 7 months old. Does however shouldn't be bred until at least 7-8 mo. of age.
Nigerians have 150 day gestgation and usually kid 3-4 kids. They make excellent mothers and can give 3-4 lbs. of milk per day of 6-10% butterfat.
Nigerians should weigh around 75 lbs, Does measuring to be 17-19" tall (max 22.6") and Bucks measuring to be 19-20" (max 23.6"). Disqualifications include over-sized,
curly coat, roman nose, pendulous ears, and showing evidence of myatonia.
